Grandmaster Tim Wakefield (Shi Yan Feng - 释 延 枫)
Tim has been training for almost 40 years, during which time he has traveled the globe to expand his knowledge of the martial arts and has achieved senior certifications in several unique disciplines:
- Shaolin-si Chan Kung-Fu- 34th Generation Warrior Disciple (Shaolin Temple, China & Songshan Chan Wu Canada)
- American Kenpo – 9th Dan Grandmaster (IKCG)
- 7 Star Northern Praying Mantis Kung-fu- 9th Gen. Grandmaster (7SPMKFA)
- Shaolin Kempo – 8th Dan Senior Master (VMA)
- Muso Jikiden-Eishin Ryu Iaido– 5th Dan (CKF)
- Shindo Muso Ryu Jodo– 4th Dan (CKF)
- Kempo Kobudo– 8th Dan (SGK)
Aside from these, his experience also includes Ninpo Tai-jutsu (Ninja), various Karate methods, Wing Chun, Arnis/Escrima, Tae Kwon Do, Aikido, and Judo. He is also currently an active student of Shaolin Chan-Wu Kung-Fu.
However, throughout all his studies, Tim’s main focus remains in his personal style of Shaolin Kempo Kung-Fu. In 2018, Master Wakefield was awarded the 9th Degree Black Belt and granted the prestigious title of ‘Grandmaster’ (or Shi Tai Gong) by the International Kenpo Council of Grandmasters, an organization dedicated to the perpetuation and preservation of Kempo’s historical & current lineage.
He has competed and placed in numerous National, Invitational & International events, as well as participated in, and conducted seminars and demonstrations throughout North America and in China, including several shows performing with the monks at the Shaolin Temple both publicly and for foreign dignitaries. In 2016, Master Wakefield was tested and accepted by the head Abbot of the Shaolin Temple Shi Yong Xin as a 34th Generation Disciple and awarded the name Shi Yan Feng (释 延 枫).
He has even appeared in several feature films such as CBC’s production of ‘Dieppe’, ‘Getting Away with Murder’, and the recent Colin Ferrell’s remake of ‘Total Recall’.
Tim’s experience also includes over 10 years in Law Enforcement as a Security Specialist as well as the Canadian Armed Forces.
Grandmaster Wakefield has been teaching the martial arts in Aurora and across Ontario and Quebec since 1994, has been an active consultant to the Toronto Police Service Training College, and is one of the highest-ranking Instructor’s in Canada! Master Tim takes a practical and pragmatic approach to the study of martial arts and strives to be the best example of such for his students.
SHAOLIN Martial Arts Canada is also recognized by the Shaolin Temple as an official Overseas Shaolin Culture Institution.
Shaolin Master Shi Yuan Jing 释元净
Shifu Jing is a 34th Generation Master and Buddhist monk of the Shaolin Temple, where he has been training since the age of 9. He has traveled the world for 6 years demonstrating Gong-Fu, including such shows as ‘Wheel of Life’ and ‘Sutra’, as well as the well known ‘Shaolin Warriors’ tours. For the past 3 years he has been teaching and ministering in Toronto, eager to expand knowledge of Shaolin culture, wisdom, philosophy, and of course, Gong-Fu!
Shifu has graciously offered his experience to assist in our school by providing periodic workshops to enhance our understanding of the Shaolin way and maintaining our high standards in martial arts training. We at Shaolin Martial Arts are exceptionally fortunate and honoured to have Shifu Jing’s influence and experience.
Shifu Daniel 'Dragon' Wakefield
Shifu Daniel Wakefield has been training in Shaolin Kempo Kung-fu since he was 5 years old and has since achieved a 3rd Duan ranking. Over his 15-year career in the martial arts, he has become an accomplished student and teacher. He has placed in countless regional and international tournaments, participated in over 45 seminars and workshops throughout USA and Canada and also holds a 2nd Dan in Kobudo in addition to having 5 years of experience in Muso Jikiden Eishing Ryu Iaido and Shindo Muso Ryu Jodo. A favorite among the kids, he is always quick with a joke and can make any class fun to be in.
Shifu Rocco Colarossi
Shifu Rocco Colarossi, 3rd in Duan Shaolin Kempo Kung-Fu, is one of our most prominent instructors. He not only has many years experience in Iaido, Jodo and Kobudo, but also is our resident personal trainer and creator of the Roc-Solid Fitness program. He is a dedicated and hardworking student and equally so as an instructor. He is currently working hard to take Shaolin Kempo Kung-Fu into the full-contact circuits and will soon head up our Competitive Sparring Team. Plus, he helps run the place!
Shifu Elena Lee
Shifu Elena Lee, 3rd Duan Black Sash in Shaolin Kempo Kung-Fu and a Senior practitioner in Traditional Weapons, is one of our leading instructors and top kung-fu performers as well as a veteran of the Shaolin Warrior Action team and an avid tournament competitor. Well known for her ‘opposite side’ forms and her specialty in the use of the Kwan Dao and Trident, Elena has won many awards for her skills.
Shifu Ethan 'Tiger' Wakefield
Shifu Ethan Wakefield, 3rd Duan Black Sash in Shaolin Kempo Kung-Fu and a Senior practitioner in Traditional Weapons, is a class favorite among our students. Ethan is a very highly decorated tournament champion with over 30 placing medals and trophies collectively, as well as one of our elite performers in the Shaolin Warrior Action Team performing in countless demonstrations, and our resident Tricking expert. Ethan is currently one of our Shaolin Warrior Action Team trainers and choreographers. Anyone in his classes will enjoy his high energy style.
Shifu Irene Shlensky
Shifu Irene, 3rd Duan Black Sash in Shaolin Kempo Kung-Fu and a Senior practitioner in Traditional Weapons, is one of our more illustrious instructors. She is a tough and exacting instructor who encourages only the very best from the students. Also a senior member/drummer of the Shaolin Warrior Action Team, multiple time champion in tournaments, and a specialist in Kung-Fu Fan and Butterfly swords, Irene is a great role model for all aspiring martial artists.
Shifu Zayd Khalid
Shifu Zayd Khalid, 3rd Duan Black Sash in Shaolin Kempo Kung-Fu and has participated in many competitive events and seminars. Don’t be fooled by his cool and easy going appearance, he is a fiercely enthusiastic martial artist and brings an intellectual quality to the practice that goes beyond his years. Students would be wise to heed the word of Mr. Khalid in class.
Shifu Marco Javellana
Shifu Marco Javellana, 3rd Duan Black Sash in Shaolin Kempo Kung-Fu/ Senior practitioner in Traditional Weapons, is another superstar of tournaments and demonstrations. Marco is one of our most experienced Lion performers in the Shaolin Warrior Action Team, and despite his young age, is one of our more experienced instructors. With his dynamic and exacting technique, he is on his way to rivalling our top Instructors in awesomeness.
Assistant Instructor Liam Bray
Liam Bray, 2nd Duan Black Sash in Shaolin Kempo Kung-Fu/ Senior practitioner in Traditional Weapons, is probably one of the most dedicated martial artist this school has ever seen. There is not a technique or skill that escapes Liam’s attention. As one of our leading members of the Shaolin Warrior Action Team, his focus on detail and execution are impeccable.
Assistant Instructor Monica Pap
Monica Pap, 1st Duan Black Sash in Shaolin Kempo Kung-Fu is one of our most determined and dedicated up-and-coming instructors. She is actively training in Traditional Weapons and QiGong, as well as being an assistant instructor of R.A.T. (Rapid Assault Tactics). Monica aspires to own and operate her own Shaolin Martial Arts Canada in the near future. She also has a Black Belt in Kempo Karate from her previous training.
